At some point in our careers, we all likely feel the fear of change. Making the decision to move into a new role, or change the course of your career is understandably quite a stressful time. We can let the fear of change hold us back, which might lead to missed opportunities. There are a few things that you can do to help move yourself out of this headspace and beat the fear of change!

Talk with your current employers
If you’re considering a job change or step up in your career, you should talk with your current employers in the first instance. They’ll know if they can make this happen for you, before you start looking to move elsewhere. This is useful if you’re happy with the work environment that you’re in. You’ll confidently know where your employers stand and if they can help you out. If not, you’ll know that moving to a new company is your best bet.
Have a goal in mind
Even if you’re not entirely sure, figuring out roughly what it is you’re looking for is important. Some things to consider are…
- Where do you want your career to be in 1 – 5 years time?
- What are you interested in exploring?
- Can you set yourself small milestones to reach your goal?
Having a goal will set you up for success. You’ll be more focussed and confident in reaching these goals!
Do your research
Once you have your goal in mind, you can start to do some research. Being prepared will take the fear out of your decision. You’ll have a clear path and understanding of what you need to do to make the right changes for your career. It’s important to consider…
- If you need to upskill
- Can any recruiters advise you?
- What additional qualifications or experience you’ll need
Talk to others
Talking things through with others can be very beneficial. Whether that’s friends, family or colleagues. Having a chat about what you want to do will help to clear your mind!
It’s also worth identifying other people in your industry who can advise you, particularly if they’re in the position that you want to be in. You’ll get a clearer understanding of how to reach your goals, and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
Apply for new roles
Take the risk and see where it leads! There’s no harm in applying to jobs and attending interviews to see what’s out there. You may even find exactly what you were looking for…
Don’t let the fear of change hold you back! Prepare yourself for the challenge of change, and take the leap of faith.
